History of Lehigh Acres
Lehigh Acres is a small city located just east of Fort Myers. In the 1950s, businessman Lee Ratner teamed up with friend Gerald Gould and launched one of the most brilliant land schemes ever in Florida. The two men wanted to cater to middle class post – World War II families in the Midwest. The Lehigh Development Corporation started selling the dream of Florida living for the rock-bottom price of $10 down and $10 a month. Within no time, Lehigh was booming and was home to middle-income families, snowbirds, and new families looking for the Florida lifestyle.
Over the next few decades, Lehigh Acres started to see dark clouds form. $10 down and $10 a month was no longer enough revenue to sustain growth in the area, and because of this, the Lehigh Corporation was forced to sell in order to avoid bankruptcy. The late 1980s was the end of the Florida Dream-town that Ratner and Gould pioneered years before.
There was not much growth in Lehigh until the mid-2000s. Property values that were deemed useless just years before, saw growth numbers surpass 130%. Everyone was flocking to Lehigh Acres to be a part of the 21st century gold rush. Cheap property and beautiful Florida weather, who wouldn’t want to take advantage? This boom lasted until 2008 when the collapse of the economy halted all development, crushing Lehigh again for years to come.
Today, Lehigh Acres is a tight knit community, with roots going back far before the boom. The old attractions are long gone, but Lehigh Acres is still committed to bringing back the dream of the Original Florida Dreamtown.
