History of Spring Hill
Spring Hill was founded by the Mackle Brothers’ Deltona Development Corporation in 1967. By 1967, the Mackle Brothers had already developed several other areas in Florida: Key Biscayne, Marco Island, Deltona, and many others.
The Mackle brothers had only envisioned Spring Hill to include 15,000 acres of property. The plan included seven schools, 23 churches, 500 acres of commercial property, and 2 golf courses. In order to put their plan into motion, the Mackle brothers had set up sales centers in Long Island and Grand Central Station, New York. The sales team would fly potential buyers from NY to FL to have them play golf, see the community, and buy a lot in Spring Hill. The plan worked, and the sales sites hit a record number of almost 29,000 land plots in just three years.
Spring Hill marketers needed another attraction for potential customers, so the chicken plucking contest was created. They also crowned a Miss Drumstick, who was the contestant with the most beautiful legs. This contest is still held today, in the town of Masaryk, the south end of Spring Hill.
